After the big dump of snow on 12/18 (Mon.), another major storm rolled in yesterday, 12/21 (Thurs.), bringing heavy snow (especially overnight last night). Thanks to the new snow, today the decision was made to open up more terrain. In addition to the Yamabiko D Course, the Yamabiko A, B, C, and E courses, Kokenashi A and B courses, and Uenotaira Slope (pictured) are now open!

I spoke with a member of the ski patrol, who told me, “We still don’t have as much as we want, but we got a big dump of good snow.” As I skied from the Yamabiko D course, which was groomed with a moderately firm powder snow surface, to the ungroomed Yamabiko B (pictured), I was thrilled to find over 50cm of fresh, fluffy snow! I enjoyed floating and bouncing across the uneven surface below.

I ran into two people from Komagane and Nagano cities (pictured) who told me they were fans of Snownavi, and added, “We heard a once-in-ten-year weather system was on the way, so we applied for time off from work for a ‘powder vacation’ and came here. Our legs are already smashed!” Aside from the powder areas, I was able to link fun turns on the moderately packed powder groomers of Kokenashi A and B.

The widely groomed Uenotaira Slope (pictured) also featured a moderately firm powder snow surface, with some exposed bushes towards the end of the slope. In other news, an opening event will be held at 11:00 tomorrow, 12/23 (Sat.), near the Nagasaka Gondola summit station, where nabe (hot pot) and sake will be served. As I finished my reporting around 10:00 a.m., the snow that had died down picked up in intensity once again.
