Terrain has been opening up fast at Happo, with the Skyline Course opening at 1:00 p.m. on 12/23 (Sat.), the Riesen Slalom Course opening at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Kitaone Course and Sakka Slope later in the afternoon on 12/24 (Sun.), and the Olympic Course II today. (*See current slope map) It was a peaceful Christmas morning with the sun shining through high clouds and dry snowflakes dancing in the air.

Skiing was pleasant alongside the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), where the moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface had a feathery smooth layer of 5 to 6cm of new snow that billowed up behind me as I went. The southern route of Usagidaira, which is at about the same elevation, was groomed with well-packed powder snow that was also easy to ski.

The groomed portion of the Skyline Course (pictured) had a similar feel to Kurobishi, but the 3 to 5cm of fresh snow topping things off was slightly less. Snow coverage was sufficient, and there were no areas of exposed brush on Kurobishi, Usagidaira, or Skyline. The ungroomed areas along the Skyline 2 Pair and Kurobishi 3 Pair had soft bases with an enjoyable 10 to 15cm of new snow.

Going back to the start of the day, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the pure white winter landscape viewed from the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured). Riesen was groomed with a moderately firm powder snow surface on the top half, and the Usuba and Shirakaba slopes on the bottom half left ungroomed. The tips of tall stalks of grass were peaking through the base on Shirakaba, and there was about 5cm of fresh snow atop the hardpacked tracks across the surface.
