Sugadaira REPORT

2023.12.2230cm / Cloudy

Although natural snow is still scarce, Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort is in the process of expanding its skiable area thanks to the work of artificial snow-making machines. As of today, 12/22 (Fri.), five lifts are in operation serving five courses: Urataro / Stage 3, Ura Davos / Wave, Shirogane / Mack, Omatsu / No. 1 Quad, and Tsubakuro / No. 2 Pair. Also, starting tomorrow, the Oku Davos Snow Park and Hinode Course will also be open to skiers and snowboarders. (*Hinode had only been open on weekends so far, but will be open daily beginning tomorrow.)
[Ura Taro Family West]

The Ura Davos Heart no mori Course was groomed to the width of two to three grooming machines with a firm surface at the top and bottom, and a hard packed section in the middle. I spoke with three students from Kanagawa and Saitama prefectures (pictured) who came to Sugadaira for the first time on a package booked with Travel Inn. They told me, “On the first day, we went to Family East, which was quite steep and difficult for us. It was fun, but we fell down a lot and our butts are pretty sore!”

The Shirogane Rinkan Course, which opened today, can be accessed from the Mack Lift as well as from the Stage 3 off-ramp. The groomed snow surface was hardpacked with occasional clumps of snow scattered about. I ran into a group of children (pictured) from Tokyo taking part in skiing lessons who told me, “This is fun! Our coach is very kind, so we’re getting better and better.”

The Ura Taro Family East area (pictured) has been widened, and now extends to about 90% of the total course width. I found the groomed hard packed snow surface allowed me to set my edges and ski at speed enjoyably and comfortably. In other news, a “Santa Claus is Coming to the Slopes” event will be held from 1:00 p.m. on 12/24 (Sun.) During the event, those who run into Santa Claus and his reindeer on the slopes will receive sweets! (*The event ends when all the sweets have been given out.)
