We got a decent accumulation of new snow overnight which was more than had been expected. And with the opening of the Nakiyama Slope today, Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort is now “fully open” (i.e., more than 80% of all resort terrain is skiable)! I caught up with a father from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, left), who told me, “I love your site and use it often! My son (pictured, right) and I are staying in our car and bouncing around from resort to resort during the winter vacation period.”

Fog was moving in and out across the mountain, and there was 15 to 20cm of light, fresh snow in the area alongside the Alpen Quad (pictured). Although there were irregularly-sized and shaped bumps across the base, the soft snow made it easy to ski. I also enjoyed runs on the moderately soft, groomed snow surface on the south side of Usagidaira.

The Panorama Course (pictured) was groomed with a somewhat firm, powder snow surface. I found the conditions easy to set my edges and ski at speed under control. The groomed snow on Kurobishi was on the soft side, and there was between 10 to 15cm of fresh snow in the ungroomed areas, just as there was along the Alpen Quad.

On the south side of the Panorama Course, members of the Hakuba Village Ski Club began setting up slalom gates before 9:00. After being greeted by the coach (pictured, black jacket), I was told that students from elementary to high school age would be practicing Giant Slalom today. There was around 15 to 20cm of new snow atop the soft, deep moguls of the Olympic Course II, and 10 to 15cm of fresh snow on the Sakka Slope, where all the runs were left ungroomed.
