Yesterday the resort crossed the “fully open” threshold, and today the Shirakaba 1 Pair began operation, opening up the Central Course. However, more snow is still needed. The amount and quality of snow on the top half of Riesen, Kurobishi, Usagidaira, Panorama, and Skyline are perfect, but most of the lower courses are ungroomed. This morning, the top half of the ski resort was blanketed in thick fog.

With the thick fog, I overheard visitors making comments like, “It’s a total whiteout,” and, “Let’s take it slow.” The top half of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface, and finally emerged from the fog after skiing down to the end of the slope (the Usuba slope), which was ungroomed and full of tracks.

At around 8:30 a.m., just as the Alpen Quad started moving, fine snow began to fall, and fog was rolling in and out over the tops of the Kurobishi and Usagidaira slopes. On the southern side of Usagidaira and in the area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns on the moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface.

The center section of the Skyline Course (pictured) was groomed with a moderately packed wet snow surface. There I spoke with an instructor from the Hakuba Happo-One Ski & Snowboard School (pictured), who told me, “I love your site. I’m warming up with my son who is on the technical team.” The Kitaone Forest Course and Sakka Wave had firm, roughly groomed wet snow, while the route from Sakka Wave to the gondola base station was ungroomed with bushes noticeable throughout.
