The Alps No. 3 High-Speed Pair is now operating, and with both the Highway and Kamoshika courses now open, there a total of eight courses skiable at Hakunori. I was greeted by two snowboarders who told me they were fans of Snownavi. The one on the right told me, “I have a Hakuba Valley season ticket, and decide which resort to board at depending on the conditions. It’s great to be the first ones on the slope!”

The slopes were shrouded in a thin layer of fog, and fine snow was falling along with a northerly wind. I spoke with a couple from the Osaka area (pictured) staying at the Hakuba Alps Hotel, who told me, “We love your site! We decided on Hakunori today since the Alps No. 3 High-Speed Pair opened up. We’ve been coming to Hakunori for more than 10 years.” The upper portion of the Highway Course (pictured) had a groomed, hard-packed wet snow surface topped with 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow.

The lower part of Highway (pictured) had similarly firm, groomed wet snow, and it was a similar story on Kamoshika, where 1 to 2cm of fresh snow sat atop a base that was slightly softer than Highway. I found that my skis slid well and it was easy to turn on all of the runs, but bushes became more noticeable on the lower half of the courses.

The hard-packed, groomed wet snow surfaces of the Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) and Wakaguri Forest Course were beginner-friendly and easy to ski. Families began to show up in number around 9:00 a.m., mostly because we are now into the end of the year vacation period. The well-packed, groomed snow on the Hakunori Family Course was still marked with traces of the grooming machines.
