Happy New Year! Unfortunately, Goryu was forced to close the Dynamic Course on New Year’s Eve due to a lack of snow. In addition, due to the possibility of aftershocks from the Noto Peninsula earthquake, night skiing from New Year’s Day and sunrise skiing from 1/2 (Tue.) have been temporarily suspended. On the other hand, all courses at north-facing Hakuba47 (pictured) remain open. On my way to the ski resort thing morning, I couldn’t help but take a picture of the mountain, whose trees were covered in rime ice and lit up in the early morning sun.

Incidentally, my thermometer showed -5 degrees Celsius at 6:45 a.m. I spoke with a couple from Hyogo Prefecture on Line-C, who commented, “The contrast between the blue sky and the white rime ice is very beautiful.” On Routes 5 and 6 (pictured), I was able to enjoy fast turns on the firm, groomed wet snow surfaces.

The snow on the groomed upper portion of Route 1 (pictured) was even more well-packed than on Routes 5 and 6, and I had to be careful to not get going too fast. On the lower part of Route 1, the areas here and there with artificial snow were icy. I had a great time skiing on the banks that had been formed on Route 7, which had a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface.

I caughtup with a pair of skiers from Kyoto (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! We’re staying in Hakuba with our father and three cousins from 12/29 to 1/4. It’s really great skiing on this perfect day, under the beautiful blue sky. ” The upper portion of Route 8, which was groomed with a firm, wet snow surface that felt like powder, was busy with the expected New Year’s holiday crowds, particularly families.
