Happo-one REPORT

2024.01.02140cm / Sunny

Happy New Year! It was a sunny and windless start to the second day of the New Year. I was worried about the effects of the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on New Year’s Day, but the resorts of the HAKUBA VALLEY were unaffected, and all lifts, including the gondolas at Happo, began operating as scheduled. I spoke with a member of the ski patrol who told me, “We didn’t observe any avalanches in the area managed by the ski resort, but please be careful if you are going mountain climbing or backcountry skiing.”

I had a chat with a father from Hakuba (pictured, left foreground), who told me, “I love your site! I’m here skiing with my two sons and their friends who are in town from Okinawa. I’m looking forward to your excellent resort reports again this year.” I was greeted and wished Happy New Year by many other Snowavi fans, including a family from Hyogo Prefecture, a couple from Osaka Prefecture, a family from Mie Prefecture, and many others.

The rain and sleet that fell during the day on New Year’s Eve turned to snow during the night and brought us a good amount of snow on New Year’s Day. Thanks to this, the slope conditions this morning were generally good, and it was very comfortable skiing on the groomed areas of Usagidaira (pictured) and along the Kurobishi Quad (2nd photo), where the surfaces were a mixture of wet and powdery snow.

Let’s go back to Riesen (pictured) first thing in the morning. About half of the south side of the course was groomed, and the wet snow surface there was reasonably firm and easy to ski. However, since all trails leading down to the foot of the mountain were closed on New Year’s Day because of the rain on New Year’s Eve, you now need to use the Gondola, Nakiyama Third Triple, Kokusai First Pair, or Sakka Kitaone Quad lifts to return to the base.
