This morning I spoke with a pair of high school students from Saitama Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We’re staying at the Sugadaira Sun Hotel for the next two nights on a tour booked through Orion Tour. The hotel is very close to the slopes, which is great, and now that are exams are over we can really enjoy skiing!” By some cosmic coincidence, both the tour company and the hotel mentioned by the students happen to be important sponsors of our company!
[Ura Taro Family East]
The temperature at 6:30 a.m. this morning was -2°C, which is warm for Sugadaira on the eve of New Year’s Eve. I spoke with a member of the ski patrol who commented on the great weather, and how it was perfect for hosting a tournament. In fact, during the early morning skiing hours that began at 7:00 a.m., I observed many participants (pictured) who were involved in a ski tournament for medical schools in the Chubu and Kanto areas.
[Omatsuyama Go-no-Hara]
The groomed Go-no-Hara and Family course (pictured) had well-packed wet snow surfaces in excellent condition for carving, and I found that my edges bit and my skis slid well. Champion was groomed with a flat finish, and was empty. In other news, Smile Park, which has a snow escalator and is an ideal for sledding, opened today.

I spent some time conversing with an alpine snowboarder from Tokyo who was the first to enter Stage 3. He said, “The Snownavi site is so fun to look at because it’s obvious that its run by people who really love skiing and snowboarding.” I also ran into a couple that I first met last year, who told me, “We came here to ski during the year-end and New Year holiday period. We found the Family East course easier to ski than Family West. Oh, and we have the picture you took of us last year saved as the background photo on our phones!” Family West and East were both carved up with deep tracks.
