Although the temperature didn’t drop particularly low, snow began falling overnight at the ski resort, and was falling around JR Hakuba Station this morning. The firm, deep moguls in the area along the Alpen Quad (pictured) were covered by 10 to 15cm of light, fresh snow! There was about 5cm of light new snow on the southern route of Usagidaira and on Riesen, where the groomed surfaces were composed of a mix of wet and powder snow.

I headed over to the area paralleling the north-facing Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured) in search of even lighter fresh snow. Conditions were technical as the base underneath the 15 to 20cm of new snow had hard, irregular undulations and shrubs poking out here and there, but there were plenty of excited shouts from those dropping in.

Conditions were great along the Kurobishi Quad and on the Skyline Course, were the moderately soft powder snow base was topped off with 5 to 7cm of new snow! I ran into a group of five Australians (pictured) at Kitaone, who after slashing through some heavy fresh snow, told me with a smile, “I love JAPOW! Arigato gozaimasu!”

Since the Kitaone Course and Kitaone Traverse Cat Track closed after New Year’s Day, you will need to use the Sakka Kitaone Quad descending line (pictured) to get down to the base of the mountain. Since the other trails returning to the base are also closed, you need to take the Gondola, Kokusai 1 Pair, or Kokusai 3 Pair lifts to acces the base.
