Luckily the forecast calling for a mix of sunshine and rain was off, and it turned out to be a mix of sun and snow, with intermittent flurries of dry snow carried by a northwest wind. I spoke with a staff member of the resort who told me, “I’m relieved to see that snow is forecasted to start this evening. I hope it turns out to be a decent amount.”

Anyway, today conditions on the freshly groomed Panorama Course (pictured) were excellent! My skis slid smoothly over the immaculately groomed, firm wet snow surface, and there were no exposed bushes or areas of thin snow. I overheard people commenting how great the snow felt and how easy it was to ski.

With almost none of the Riesen Slalom Course groomed, I observed a lot of the advanced skiers and boarders cruising down the Panorama Course at high speed. Being the first day of a three-day holiday weekend, the crowds began to show up in number around 9:00 a.m., but during my time at Happo (until around 10:00 a.m.), there were almost no lines for the lifts on the open slopes, and I was able to go up and down comfortably.

The southern route of Usagidaira and the Skyline Course (pictured) were groomed with nice and firm, wet snow conditions similar to Panorama. The area along the Kurobishi Quad had a wet snow surface that was slightly less firm, but all were easy to ski. The Shirakaba 1 pair lift has been closed since yesterday due to a lack of snow, leaving the Sakka Slope as the only open slope in the lower area.
