Happo-one REPORT

2024.01.10170cm / Snowy

This morning the slopes were a world of snow and fog. As I stepped off the gondola, which started moving on time at 8:00 a.m., dry snow was coming down hard, carried by a weak westerly wind. I spoke with a Happo regular who told me, “There’s more snow than I expected.” I also felt the same, as there was 25cm of light, fresh snow accumulated on the on the unggroomed steep slope along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured).

The thick fog made it somewhat difficult to see the snow surface, and I bottomed out from time to time on the firm tracks and surface bumps below the fresh snow, but I still enjoyed the feeling of skiing on high-quality powder. The area along the Kurobishi Quad had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface topped with 15 to 20cm of fine, new snow, and I had fun making turns on the fluffy fresh pow.

The ungroomed area on the west side of the Skyline Course (pictured) had 10 to 15cm of fresh snow on top of a hard, uneven base. Even still, my skis slid smoothly and I was able to turn at will. With it being a weekday in January, visitor turnout was slow, and I was able to ski untouched areas for quite a while.

The groomed center section of the Skyline Course (pictured) also had a moderately firm powder snow surface topped with around 10cm of new snow, with the snowflakes growing larger and wetter as I skied down further. The Kitaone Forest Course and Sakka Wave were both groomed with relatively firm wet snow surfaces, and about 3 to 5cm of new wet snown the groomed course and Sakibana Wave on the Kitaone groomed course with moderately compacted wet snow, 3 to 5 cm of wet new snow that seemed to firm and thicken as fresh tracks were laid.
