Iwatake REPORT

2024.01.12130cm / Snowy

The 3.3-kilometer-long Sunny Valley Course (pictured), with a maximum slope angle of 24 degrees and an average of 11 degrees, is a long and varied course that changes from south-facing to north-facing, and can be lapped via the gondola. This morning there was 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow on the course, where the top and bottom sections were groomed with moderately-firm wet snow surfaces, and the middle (pictured) featured well-packed, groomed wet snow.

There were thin patches of snow on the top half of the course, with improved snow cover at the end, thanks to artificial snowfall. Small, hail-like pellet snow was falling, but the hope is that the winter weather system moving into the area tonight and tomorrow will bring plenty of fresh snow. The White Ribbon Course, which splits off from Sunny Valley, opened for skiers and boarders on 1/8 (Mon., holiday).

The South Slope (pictured) had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface topped with 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow. I found it easy to ski, though there were some areas where the snow surface was uneven (because of the underlying terrain). I spoke with a couple from Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka Prefecture, who told me, “We love your site. We really like Iwatake, so we come here often to snowboard.”

VIEW D (pictured) had a moderately soft, groomed powder snow surface up top that was firmer on the bottom half, and was covered with 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow. By the way, it’s possible to ski from VIEW C to VIEW D at the point viewable in the photo. In other news, a “KORUA Shapes Riding Session” will be held tomorrow, 1/13 (Sat.). (*Starts at 8:30, free of charge, limited to the first 25 registrants)
