Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2024.01.13155cm / Snowy

There are two options for visitors to Hakunori who want to head to the famous Sky View Slope at the top of the resort first thing in the morning. In order to reach the No. 9 Pair, you can either park your car at the Warabidaira parking lot and hike up the Satomi Central Slope (pictured), or park at the parking lot next to the Hakunori Family Course and walk across the slope. This morning I chose the second option, leaving from the lot at 7:20 am and arriving at the No. 9 Pair before 8:00 a.m.

On powder days visitors show up to Hakunori quite early, and when I arrived at the No. 9 Pair, there were already six other people waiting in line for the lift. Not long afterwards, more and more people began to arrive, and I was greeted by a group (pictured) who said they love Snownavi. At the bottom of the resort, the wind was blowing lightly and dry snow was falling.

I boarded the No. 9 Pair as it started operating at 8:30 a.m., then went directly to the No. 10 Pair Lift boarding area. A member of the ski patrol who had just checked the Sky View slope, told everyone, “The snow is fantastic! But there are some areas where you’ll bottom out, so please ski carefully.” We had to brave the northwesterly winds that were blowing the snow horizontally, but everyone was still excited to get to the top of the resort.

Sky View’s underlying base was hard and uneven, but the 35-40 cm of fluffy new snow provided plenty of buoyancy and I thoroughly enjoyed runs on the fresh powder! I ran into two people from Kanagawa after I had finished my reporting, who told me, “We love your site. The self-responsibility area on the west side of Sky View was waist deep!” The groomed slopes all had soft, powder snow conditions.

**The Alps No. 11 Pair Lift began moving at 10:00 today. Helmets, beacons, shovels, probes, and other safety equipment are required for the ride. If you sign up for and receive an armband (¥500) prior to your initial use of the lift, you can board without going through the procedure the next time.
