The clear skies yesterday, 1/14 (Sun.), came after a day of constant snowfall on 1/13 (Sat.), and was followed up with yet more heavy snow again last night and this morning. I crossed paths with a snowboarder from Tokyo (pictured), who told me he was a fan of Snownavi, then asked, “Did the people who came up earlier head for Riesen?” I told him that on a powder day like today, many people line up for the Alpen Quad directly after getting off the gondola. The Alpen Quad began operating just after that, around 20 minutes earlier than the official start time, so we quickly headed over.

There was 10 to 20 cm of light, fresh snow on the Panorama Course (pictured), which had a moderately firm, groomed powder base, and on the early part of the Riesen Slalom Course. The steeped, ungroomed areas along the Kurobishi 3 Pair and Alpen quad, as well as Urakuro and Sodeguro had 40 to 50cm of light, fresh snow sitting on top of a firm surface marked with tracks!

The ungroomed area of Riesen Grat (pictured), at the top of ski resort, also had 40 to 50 cm of light new snow! That deep fresh powder, along with the soft base below, made for the best flotation of the season so far. The area along the Grat Quad was groomed to the width of a single grooming machine, and the 10 to 15 cm of light, fresh snow made for easy skiing conditions.

As I descended to the Central Course, I started to feel the 15 to 20 cm of new snow growing slightly heavier. On the Shirakaba Slope, the only groomed bits were the area around the Shirakaba 1 Pair landing area (pictured) and the route leading down to the base from Riesen. At 9:30 a.m., the snow began to lighten up at the foot of the mountain, and blue sky began to peek through the clouds.
