Iwatake REPORT

2024.01.15180cm / Snowy

January is the coldest month of the year, and the perfect time to try the aromatic soups at Soup Stock Tokyo located in SKYARK. (*Open daily from 9:00 to 15:00) In addition to Tokyo Borscht, a special Hakuba-only menu item, other soup options include Lobster Bisque and Corn & Sweet Potato Soup (¥700 each, including tax). Tokyo Chicken Curry (¥1,100, tax included) is also available, and another great choice for warming up from the cold.

The base depth at Iwatake is currently 180 cm, which is more than 1 meter above what it was this same day last year despite expectations of a warm winter with little snow. Although the densely falling snow, north wind, and fog made it difficult to see the snow surface, the South Slope’s moderately firm, groomed powder base topped with 5 to 10 cm of light fresh snow was very pleasant. There was 30 to 40 cm of fluffy fresh snow just to the sides of the groomed area.

I spoke with a snowboarder from Yokohama, who told me, “I love your site. I rent an apartment in Hakuba and ski during the winter. I did a few runs down to the base area first thing this morning and the conditions were really nice.” VIEW C was groomed, and there was around 10 cm of fluffy fresh snow on top of the moderately soft, powder base.

I was greeted by a group from Otari and Hakuba (pictured) who told me they were Snownavi fants. The added, The snow looked pretty good today, so we came to Iwatake since there is less competition for fresh powder.” The Sunny Valley Course had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface and about 5 cm of new snow up top, with a firmly packed, groomed wet snow surface lower down that was topped with 5 cm of heavy, new snow. I enjoyed playing around on the features of the underlying terrain as I made my way down.
