A small event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort was held in front of the Nagasaka Gondola base station (pictured) on 1/13 (Sat.). The turnout was impressive, with a crowd of people gathering even before the start time. The event featured complimentary soft drinks such as Coke and orange juice, and Mizuo, a locally brewed sake made with spring water from Mt. Mizuo; a peak located on the north side of the ski resort.

Some people helped themselves to seconds, and others paired the sake with food they had brought with them. The sake and soft drinks ran out fast, and were all gone within 15 minutes. The special Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort 100th Anniversary page, which is linked to on the official website, offers a look back at the 100-year history of the resort through photos.

The FW24-25 BRIGHT TOUR (pictured), a Salomon snowboard test-ride event, is being held from 1/12 (Fri.) to 1/13 (Sat.) on the upper portion of the Uenotaira Slope, and has around 130 boards as well as bindings that are free to test. I spoke with a staff member who commented, “We are glad you could try out the boards when the snow quality was good.” We’re glad that people get to try out the boards with good snow conditions.”

Similarly, a snowscoot test-ride event (free of charge) is being held on 1/13 (Sat.) and 1/14 (Sun.) at a special event tent on the Nagasaka Slope (pictured). A total of 13 snowscoots representing 8 separate models, including the snowscoot ONE-D, are available to try. Beginners are welcome, and can test-ride the equipment near the event area after a brief lecture on basic operation. While I was there for my report I observed one person learn how to ride a snowscoot well in a short amount of time.
