Today was the first clear day following the heavy snows that lasted from 1/13 (Sat.) to 1/16 (Tue.). This morning, with the cooperation of instructors from the Hakuba Happo-One Ski and Snowboard School, I conducted a photo shoot on the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) before the resort opened, while the colors of the sunrise still lingered in the sky.

The groomed slopes were in fantastic condition, with copious amounts of fresh, high-quality snow that let out that perfect powder squeak when you walked on it. One of the instructors I photographed said, “These are the best conditions of the season so far.” I couldn’t help but be amazed by the sight of the skilled skiers flying down the groomed, moderately firm powder snow surface of Riesen (pictured) at incredible speeds.

One instructor told me, “We offer a variety of programs from kid, beginner, and intermediate lessons to advanced and expert level lessons. We’re looking forward to working with everyone.” The school is also home to some of Japan’s leading instructors, including National Demonstrator Junya Maruyama and SAJ Demonstrator Takuto Toshida.

The steep ungroomed slope along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured, background), which was closed yesterday, had between 10 to 30 cm of fresh wind packed snow. The Panorama Course (third photo), the area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the southern route of Usagidaira, and the Skyline Course all had excellent powder snow conditions just like Riesen!
