Today I spoke with two people from Hyogo Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We used a tour bus to come snowboarding. Every year we take some paid time off and go somewhere to board. This is our first time to come to Cortina, and we are staying one night at the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba. We’re going to practice hard today, so we should be better by tomorrow.” It was a quiet morning with occasional light sunshine and lightly falling wet snow.

The Ikenota Slope and Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) were groomed with well-packed wet snow surfaces. I had a brief conversation with a snowboarder from Hong Kong (pictured) that said he came to Japan as an exchange student and wants to visit many resorts during his 3 days in Hakuba. He said he skied at Happo the day before yesterday, Goryu47 yesterday, and today was his first time at Cortina. He added, “I also want to visit Tsugaike.”

The Rabbit Course (pictured) was similarly groomed with a well-compacted wet snow base. I was worried because it was warm in the morning, but as expected, the rain started to mix with snow around 9:30 am. In related news, Snake, Kamoshika, Hiedayama Ridge, Hiedayama 2, Hiedayama 3, Giant, and Itadaira Ridge were closed due to avalanche danger.

The Ikenota Slope was crowded with students on a school excursion from Fukuoka Prefecture, but since the lesson was held on the skiers’ left side of Ikenota, which widens towards the end, it didn’t affect the skiing of general visitors. A number of similar school excursions are scheduled to continue at Cortina until mid-February, mainly on weekdays.
