Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2024.01.19210cm / Snow & Clouds

The weather has changed dramatically over the last several days, with heavy snow from 1/15 (Mon.) to 1/16 (Tue.), clear skies on 1/17 (Wed.), and rain on 1/18 (Thu.). This morning, the entire ski resort was enveloped in a thick fog. The well-packed, wet groomed snow on the Wakaguri Central Slope was in good condition, but I had to cut back on my speed due to the poor visibility.

Students on school trips and international visitors made up a good portion of those on the Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) and Wakaguri Forest Course. Around 9:30, the fog in the base area had cleared and it was starting to brighten up. The Wakaguri Forest Course also had a firmly groomed wet snow base, and the stands of trees lining the course on both sides made it easier to know where to head even with the suffocating fog.

After climbing all the way up to the top of the Highway Course (pictured), where there was about 1 cm of fresh snow on top of a hard, groomed wet snow surface, the fog thinned out and visibility became better and brighter. The latter part of Highway was left ungroomed. The Kamoshika Course had similarly firm groomed wet snow with improved visibility, and because it was nearly empty I was able to ski freely.

spoke with a couple from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! We came to Hakunori and Cortina yesterday and will leave tomorrow. Since it was raining yesterday afternoon, we went to Itoigawa to eat sushi.” The Rabbit Course featured 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow topping the hard, groomed wet snow base.
