This morning the rain that fell throughout the day and into the late evening hours yesterday had stopped, and there were beautiful views of the Northern Alps early on. Little by little clouds began to spread across the sky, however, and by the time the resort opened, it was mostly overcast with only faint sunlight shining through. The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured), had a firmly groomed, fine granular snow surface that my skis slid very well across.

The sight of a skier (pictured) descending straight down the first, steep part of the slope (around 30 degrees) with such fast conditions was quite impressive. For a moment, as I watched his thrilling run I thought to myself, “Are you crazy,” but then I remembered that this is Happo, the gathering place of experts. The Riesen slope was beautifully groomed all the way to Usuba, and there were no bushes or areas with thin snow cover.

I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns on the firm, groomed wet snow along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured). The area paralleling the Kurobishi 3 Pair had hardened tracks and bumps marking the snow surface. The groomed central portion of the Skyline Course had similar conditions to Riesen, with a fine granular snow surface, though it felt slightly softer.

This morning’s best conditions were found on the southern route of Usagidaira (pictured). I thoroughly enjoyed my turns on the well-packed, groomed wet snow there, and the occasional light fog didn’t affect the skiing at all. Sakka Wave was ungroomed, and the tracks of those who skied there yesterday were hardened in place.
