The long-awaited heavy snow has arrived, just as predicted, thanks to the strongest cold front of the season! I chatted with an excited skier before the lifts opened, who said, “We finally got a big dump. It’s nice and cold too.” The gondola started on time at 8:00, and at the top, dry snow was coming down hard along with a weak northerly wind.

There was 50 to 60 cm of fresh snow on the ungroomed area along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured). The amount of snow and the quality were the best of the season, and I thoroughly enjoyed the sensation of floating that only powder can provide, although I occasionally bottomed out on the hard base. The curtain of snow and fog obscured the visibility, but I could hear the joyous shouts and cheers of other skiers and boarders nearby and off in the distance.

With this much fresh snow, I decided to head to the ungroomed area on the west side of Skyline (pictured), where there was another 40 to 50 cm of fluffy fresh powder. It was another fun session with plenty of face shots as I bottomed out on the hard undulating surface below. There was still 20 to 25 cm of fresh snow on the groomed center of Skyline, which had a moderately-packed powder base.

The Kitaone Forest Cat Track, Sakka Wave, and Sakka Slope were in good condition with about 3 cm of light, fresh topping reasonably firm groomed powder surfaces. The snow continued falling throughout the day with no sign of slowing down.
