A powerful cold front has brought a bounty of heavy snowfall to the area! On days like this, when winter storms are raging and blizzard conditions are a possibility, Hakuba Sanosaka is a great option as it’s sheltered from the wind. This morning dry snow was coming down hard, but the wind was only blowing lightly.

Moreover, being a weekday in January, there was little competition for the powder. It seemed that the majority of the new snow accumulated in the early morning hours, as there was 20 to 25 cm of light fresh snow covering the entire surface of the groomed, moderately firm wet snow surface of the Lake Down Course (pictured). I took a straight line down the mountain and enjoyed the feeling of floating on the fresh pow.

I ran into a group of Hakuba residents who were the first in line for the lift this morning, and greeted me by saying they were fans of Snownavi. Amongst them was the manager of Miyama Genghis Khan (pictured, background far left ), who told me, “I injured a ligament in my knee in early December, so I came to Sanosaka today as part of my rehabilitation. A father in the group (pictured, foreground far left) added, “I took my daughter out of daycare today so we could come and enjoy the powder together.”

The Carving Slope (third photo) and Paradise Slope (pictured) were also in good condition, with 20 to 25 cm of fresh snow on a moderately packed, groomed wet snow base, just like at Lake Down. I also rewarded myself with a run on the New Paradise Slope, where I found 30 to 40cm of fresh, fluffy snow.
