This morning I came across a local snowboarder from Shinano-machi (pictured), who exclaimed, “Ahhhh…. I’m stuck. The new snow is very deep. I’m probably going to fall a lot today, but I’ll enjoy the powder!” I experienced the fantastic feeling of floating on powder as I dropped into the untouched, ungroomed area on Monkey (pictured), where there was around 30 cm of new snow from yesterday, and around 30 cm of fresh snow from today.

I took the No. 5 Pair at 9:00 to Rabbit (pictured) and thoroughly enjoyed another 50 cm of fluffy fresh snow there. On top of everything else, the competition for the fine Kurohime powder, or “Hime-pow” as it is called, was extremely low! Unable to resist, I went back to the No. 5 Pair for a second helping.

The snow that had been coming down hard since the morning didn’t lighten up during the day, and with the cold northerly winds gusting strongly from time to time, I thought my face was going to freeze. The groomed area of Monkey (pictured), which had a moderately soft powder surface topped with 5 cm of fresh snow, the KUROHIME FAMILY PARK, and the moving sidewalk area in front of Cosmo Plaza were busy with elementary school students taking ski lessons.

I spoke with a skier from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “I saw the forecast was calling for a big storm, so I decided to come out for some skiing. After enjoying a run on the ungroomed part of Monkey, I skied the ungroomed area along the No. 2 Pair. As far as I know, this is the best snow quality of the season.” Mouse was also easy to ski, with about 10 cm of light fresh snow on top of a well-groomed powder snow base.
