Shiga REPORT

2024.01.26270cm / Cloudy

The arrival of the strongest cold wave of the season has brought significant accumulation of new snow to Shiga Kogen since 1/24 (Wed.). At the Yakebitaiyama Ski Resort, where the official snow depth is 170 cm, all courses are now open, except for YAKEBI WALL and YAKEBI VALLEY. This morning there were flurries of dry snow from the sky dominated by low-lying clouds.

I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns on the Giant Slalom Course, which had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface. By the way, the new YAKEBI VALLEY course will finally open tomorrow, 1/27 (Sat.)! (The entrance is visible on the top left of the photo.) The ungroomed area on the skiers’ left side (pictured, right background), which has been expanded since last year, had a soft, undulating base.

A skier from Shizuoka Prefecture who rode with me on the No. 1 Gondola told me, “I love your site. The Olympic Course was nice first thing in the morning, but the other groomed courses were also nice and soft as well.” The Gondola Contact Course (pictured), which branches off from the crowded Giant Slalom Course, was groomed with soft powdery snow.

Again today I crossed paths with a woman (pictured) whom I often meet at Yakebitaiyama. She said, “The Olympic Course was very nice! Perhaps the best conditions of the season.” It seems that the groomers got to work early last night on the Olympic Course, and as a result, there was 5 to 10 cm of dry fresh snow covering the groomed surface. The base consisted of well-packed powder snow with a flat finish, and it felt cutting through the fresh top layer of snow.
