Nozawa REPORT

2024.01.26220cm / Cloudy

Following the heavy snowfall on 1/16 (Tue.), the Karasawa Slope and the courses connecting to it were opened on 1/17 (Wed.), which brought Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort to the “fully open” threshold (i.e., more than 80% of terrain is open)! Furthemore, another round of heavy snow lasting from 1/23 (Tue.) to 1/23 (Wed.) brought the total snow depth to over 200cm. Today the groomed Yamabiko D Course (pictured) had a moderately soft, groomed powder snow surface, and was a pleasant place to make turns while admiring the surrounding trees covered in rime ice.

Thanks to the low temperatures and abundance of high-quality, new snow, the courses above the Paradise Slope had fantastic snow similar to the Yamabiko D course. My skis ran well on the intermediate groomed slopes, as well as on the wide and gentle, groomed Uenotaira Slope (pictured).

The weather was slowly improving, and the clouds above the ultra-wide Paradise Slope (pictured) were beginning to clear up as I dropped in. The Yamabiko area’s ungroomed Yamabiko B and E courses were busy first thing in the morning with visitors seeking out the 20 or so cm of fresh powder that covered them.

The Schneider Course (pictured), Challenge Course, and Utopia B Course were all groomed with well-packed powder snow surfaces. The beautiful snowy landscape of Kita-Shinano spreading out below me was a heartwarming sight. The Hikage Slope and Nagasaka Slope were also groomed with firm powder snow bases that made them easy to ski.
