It was a calm, sunny morning with clouds scattered across the sky. I spoke with a couple from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “We are staying at theHotel Green Plaza Hakubatonight, and this is our first visit to Cortina this season. The snow quality here is good and the hotel is right on the slopes. We’ve been to other places as well, but Cortina is the nicest.” As I walked on the groomed snow at the base area, the snow below my feet made that perfect powder squeak.

The Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) and Ikenota Slope were in excellent condition, both with moderately firm, groomed powder snow bases. The Ipponmatsu Course, which is relatively empty in the mornings even on weekends, was ideal for warming up. The Ikenota Slope was busier, but it didn’t feel overcrowded because it is so wide.

The bulletin board at the 4th Pair boarding area had a message warning skiers not to go too fast, but this morning on the Itadaira Course, I was honestly tempted to go faster. It was exhilarating taking a straight, fast line down the steep groomed slope with well-packed powder snow. The Hiedayama Forest Course was also in excellent condition, similar to the Itadaira Course.

At the Kids Park, I caught up with two families from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured, right) and Osaka (pictured, left) that said, “We come to Cortina often. This time we’re visiting for 4 days and 3 nights, starting yesterday. It’s the perfect place for the children to play, too. By the way, the sleds with steering wheels seen here in the picture can be rented for 30 minutes for JPY500.
