The first day of the 2024 TOYO TIRES FWT HAKUBA QUALIFIER 4* was blessed with clear skies today. In the morning, competitors hiked up from the Futamata hydroelectric power station to the alpine area where the competition is taking place, in order to check the slopes and conditions. (*The actual competition is slated to start tomorrow.) I was greeted by a lot of people out on the mountain today who told me that they were fans of Snownavi, including two skiers (pictured) taking the Skyline 2 Pair up.

The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) and Panorama Course were groomed with moderately soft powder snow with an impressive flat finish. My edges bit firmly into the snow, enabling me to execute turns at will and with ease. The temperature dropped below -10℃ early in the morning due to overnight radiative cooling, but once business started, the warm, direct sunlight kept me from feeling too cold.
[Riesen Slalom Course]

The groomed, pressed snow on the Usagidaira Slope (pictured), along the Kurobishi Quad, and on the Skyline Course, felt a little firmer than on Riesen. But conditions were still comfortable as my edges had no trouble gripping the snow, and my skis slid well across it. A staff member operating the lift told me, “The weekend of 1/27 (Sat.) and 1/28 (Sun.) was so crowded that it was hard to believe it was a weekend in January.”

The Kitaone Course (pictured) is back to sufficient snow cover, and was covered with a series of deep moguls. The moderately firm, powder snow conditions offered ample control and made it easy to navigate the bumps. By around 10:00 a.m., the surface snow on the Sakka, Kokusai, and Shirakaba slopes was beginning to loosen and moisten.
