Ontake REPORT

2024.01.0760cm / Snow to Sun

Ontake Ski Resort began its 2023-24 winter season on 12/9 (Sat.) with the opening of the Family Course. Although the ski area had to close on 12/11 (Tue.) and 12/12 (Wed.) due to rising temperatures and rain, since then they’ve been able to steadily expand their open terrain, and currently all courses can now be skied with the exception of the Hard Woods, Middle Woods, Light Woods, and Champion Sawa and One courses.

Though the morning sun was shining, winds rolling in and out from the thick clouds overhead in the western sky carried with them flurries of snow. The groomed Central Course (pictured) had a moderately firm “powdery” wet snow surface, and I was able to set my edges and link controlled, comfortable turns.

On the slopes, I spoke with one of the fathers of two families from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, far left), who told me, “I often check the Snownavi page. There isn’t much snow in Japan at the moment, but there is here at Ontake, and the quality of the snow is good, so it is easy to ski.” In other news, Ontake is currently taking part in the “Aichi Yosui Campaign” until 4/7 (Sun.), the last day of the season, in which junior high school students and younger children living in any of the specified areas are eligible to receive a free one-day lift ticket.

After 9:30 a.m., more and more blue skies began to be revealed. The Paradise Course (pictured), which was ungroomed yesterday, was groomed to around 50 to 70% of its total width today. Although there were still some exposed grasses and undulating terrain on the snow surface because of insufficient snow cover, the moderately firm wet snow slope with a powdery feel was pleasant to ski.
