It was the second consecutive day of cloudless skies, and the third straight mild and sunny day. As with yesterday, it was very cold early in the morning due to overnight radiative cooling, but it was comfortable by the time business started, thanks to the sunshine. In addition to general resort visitors, many people around the gondola base station looked to be heading for mountain climbing and backcountry skiing.
[Riesen Slalom Course]

Most of the people getting off the gondola and Happo Riesen Quad in the morning headed for the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured). The top of the course had a groomed powder snow surface that was moderately firm, while the last part, the Usuba Slope, had groomed wet snow with a “powdery” feel. The skiing was smooth and easy and I was able to ride at a good speed, although the feeling of the course did change with the different snow types from top to bottom.

In other news, the 2024 TOYO TIRES FWT HAKUBA QUALIFIER 4* is being held in the backcountry area in the upper portion of Happo (pictured, back right) starting at 8:45 today, with the awards ceremony scheduled for 4:00 p.m. this evening at Snow Peak LAND STATION HAKUBA. Video highlights of the competition will also be available on Hakuba Village’s official YouTube page beginning on 2/19 (Mon.).
[Kurobishi Slope]

The southern route of Usagidaira, the area along the Kurobishi Quad (third photo), the Skyline Course, and HAPPO PARKS all had groomed powder snow bases that were reasonably firm and easy to ski, while the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track and Sakka Wave were groomed with well-compacted wet snow. I was able to repeat turns comfortably on the “powdery” groomed wet snow on the Sakka Slope (pictured).
