The light rain that was falling at the base of the mountain was coming down as snow flurries from the middle to the top of the resort. The upper portion of Route 1 (pictured) had a firm, groomed surface composed of fine granular snow, and just enough new wet snow to cover the grooves from the grooming machines tracks. It was interesting to watch the contrast between the beginners skiing timidly through the thick fog, and the more advanced skiers seemingly unaffected by it.

Routes 5 (pictured) and route 6 were groomed with somewhat loose, wet snow surfaces that were amongst the easiest to ski this morning. I spoke with an instructor from the Hakuba47 Snowboard School, who told me that a Snowboard Cross Tournament will take place this weekend from 2/3 (Sat.) to 2/4 (Sun.), and that same-day registration is possible. They added, “Please come and join us!” (*There is no same-day entry for snow scoots.) Also, 47PARKS will be closed on 2/1 (Thu.) and 2/2 (Fri.) due to work on the advanced lanes, and will fully re-open on 2/3 (Sat.).

I was surprised to run into a group of students from Aichi Prefecture (pictured) who posed for a picture for me before the resort opened when they were still in normal street clothing. They told me that they rented their gear from BRAND VIKING, which is located next to the LINE-8 boarding area, and that they were really enjoying snowboarding. Their outfits looked good and they had the smiles to match!

I shared the gondola with a snowboarder from Yokohama, who told me he was a fan of Snownavi. On the slopes, he suddenly appeared from behind the thick fog with an interesting snowboarding style, and when I went to take his photo, he told me, “Ah, I fell! Just when I thought you’d be able to get a good photo of me… This snowboard is the Alps model from THE DAY.HAKUBA. I’m actually staying at Mr. Sato from Monster Cliff’s house for three days.” As I descended to the lower part of Route 1, which was groomed with moderately loose wet snow, and I emerged from below the clouds.
