At Happo, on weekdays when it rains, it’s not unusual for trails that are usually groomed to be left ungroomed. Today, the southern route of Usagidaira, Panorama, about half of Riesen, the central part of Skyline, Riesen Grat, Sakka Wave, Sakka, the lower part of Kokusai, Shirakaba, and Nakiyama were ungroomed. It was drizzling at the foot of the mountain when I took the gondola up, but as I arrived at Usagidaira, fine flakes of snow were gently falling.

The groomed portion on the skiers’ right side of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) was about half of the course width, and my skis slid well on the moderately firm, wet snow surface. I was worried that the snow cover at the end of the course might have been affected by yesterday’s rain, but there were no exposed bushes or other noticeable effects. The ungroomed southern route of Usagidaira was marked with small, moderately firm surface tracks and undulations.

Visibility was quite poor due to the thick fog, and I was wondering what to do, but I emerged above the clouds while riding the Alpen Quad. The area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) was groomed with a moderately firm wet snow base that was easy to ski. Whenever a strong gust of wind blew from the west, a thin layer of fresh snow would crawl along the snow surface and drift away.

The Skyline Course was groomed only on the forest road, and the snow surfaces on all of the areas below Skyline, both groomed and ungroomed, were loose. In particular, the groomed surface of the Kitaone traverse cat track was slush. The Sakka Slope (pictured), Kokusai Slope, and Shirakaba Slope had loose wet snow bases that were relatively smooth.
