The SMITH DEMO CARAVAN will be held over two days tomorrow and the day after at Usagidaira Terrace, giving you the chance to experience SMITH’s latest goggles and helmets (*Starting at 9:00 am, free, ID required). This morning, the trees on the top half of the ski area were covered in rime ice due to the sudden return of cold temperatures as the typical winter atmospheric pressure pattern reappeared.

It was a windless morning, but the air was cold, and light flurries of dry snow were falling. I headed first to the Panorama Beginner Course (pictured) to take in the beauty of the trees caked in rime ice since it had been a while. The conditions were good, with 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow on top of well-packed, groomed wet snow.

Similarly, the groomed Panorama Course (pictured) had 1 to 2 cm of dry snow topping a firm base. Though conditions were firm, the snow wasn’t hard enough to prevent me from setting my edges, so I was able to repeat turns comfortably. As I was heading back up on the Panorama Pair, an announcement was made that the start of the Alpen Quad would be delayed, so I skied down to the Sakka Slope, then took the Sakka Kitaone Quad and Skyline 2 Pair to access the Kurobishi Slope.

There were some clumps of snow scattered across the hard, groomed wet snow surfaces along the Kurobishi Quad and on the Skyline Course (pictured). There was around 3 to 5 cm of fresh snow along the Kurobishi 3 Pair and on the west side of Skyline, and both areas were ungroomed with hard-packed moguls and surface tracks. The Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakka Slope, and Shirakaba Slope were groomed with firm, easy-to-ski granular snow surfaces.
