This morning I spoke with a group of four from Australia (pictured), who told me, “We are staying at a lodge in Tsugaike for 10 days and are enjoying the HAKUBA VALLEY. In total, we’ll be in Japan for 20 days total. It’s our first time at Cortina.” There was no wind to start the morning, but flurries of dry snow were falling.

The moderately-firm groomed surface of the Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) was a mixture of the wet snow from the previous few days and last night’s fresh snow. I was pretty amped by the return of low temperatures and the corresponding improvement in the condition of the slopes. Ipponmatsu was relatively empty, but overall visitors were quick to turnout because of the fresh snowfall; especially international visitors.

The upper portion of the ski resort was shrouded in fog and rime ice covered the trees, creating a fantastic atmosphere. The10 to 15 cm of new snow on Hiedayama Course 1 (pictured) was a pleasant surprise, and more than expected! Thanks to the combination of the moderately firm, undulating base and the good quality fresh snow, it was easy to ski and I wanted to run it back again and again.

The Hiedayama Rinkan Course was groomed with a “powdery” wet snow base that had just the right amount of firmness. The groomed Ikenota Slope (pictured), like Ipponmatsu, had a moderately firm mix of wet and fresh snow. Overall, every run I went to this morning was easy to ski, and it was the kind of morning that I wanted to stay and play longer!
