REPORT

The winter season at the Nomugi Toge ski area kicked off on 12/27 (Wed.), as the first pair began operation and the Training Slope opened to skiers and boarders. The Rabbit and Champion courses opened the next day, 12/28 (Thu.), followed by Champion 2 on 1/19 (Fri.), and Jukai, Panorama (pictured), and Tatemizu-no-Saka on 1/20 (Sat.), for a total of 7 runs.

There was no wind this morning, and both the Rabbit and Champion courses were groomed with moderately firm “powdery” wet snow. I was able to set my edges and execute smooth turns. The Jukai and Champion 2 courses were ungroomed, but the shallow surface bumps and tracks weren’t hard, so they were easy to navigate.

The Panorama Course (pictured) and Tatemizu-no-Saka were groomed with firm wet snow bases that provided good sliding conditions. Although there were still some areas where the course narrowed due to the lack of natural snow, there were no exposed bushes in the groomed areas thanks to artificial snowfall and careful maintenance. The Training Slope had a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface. I spoke with a member of the ski resort staff, who told me, “The Bambi Slope will open tomorrow, 2/3 (Sat.). Come with your family!”

I also had a conversation with a couple from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, back row) who said, “We love your site! We come to Nomugi Toge every week. The snow quality, courses, and scenery here are great, so it’s a shame more people don’t come!” Their friend, a father (pictured, front row left), added, “I love your site, too! My 22-month-old daughter made her snowboarding debut this season, and can already make toeside and heelside turns. Soon she’ll be able to ski without my assistance.”
