It was a cloudy morning with snow flurries falling, and cold winds blowing from the north. There was a thin layer of fresn snow on the cars in the parking lot at the foot of the mountain, and beautiful corduroy was stamped across the surface of the Ikenota Slope. I spoke with a group of six visitors (pictured) from Osaka and Tochigi prefectures, who told me, “We love your site! We came out yesterday and are stying for a two nights. Yesterday we went to Seaside Valley in Itoigawa, and today we’re here at Cortina for the first time in a long time in search of good snow.”

The well-packed groomed wet snow surfaces of the Ikenota Slope (pictured) and Ipponmatsu Course were in very good condition. Being a weekend, the Ikenota Slope was busy right from the moment it opened. Children skiing together, fathers teaching their children how to ski, and the number of families in general stood out.

On the Snake Course (pictured), I overheard people commenting on the subtuble beauty of the scenery, and the groomed wet snow surface of Snake was harder packed than the Ikenota Course. It was a similar story for the Rabbit Course, and both courses were easy to ski.

Tubes (pictured) and steering-wheel-equipped sleds were popular at the Kids Park this morning. A mother of a family from Toyama told me, “The Kids Park is quite spacious, and a good, worry-free place to let the kids to play.” On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, the yuki asobi, or snow play park, is open, and there you can experience making ice cream, having a hot lunch in a kamakura snow shelter, and more. (*Reservations required.)
