Through the fog I could see a male snowboarder carrying something as he approached, and as I held up my camera, I was surprised to see that it was a baby! It was the father of a family from Chiba, and he told me, “I love your site! We come to Tsugaike every week to snowboard. The Tsuga-no-mori Slope is too foggy, so we’re going to go try the Han-no-ki Slope.”

The Tsuga-no-mori Slope (first photo) and Gotemba Course (pictured) were groomed with moderately firm, wet snow surfaces. The slopes themselves were in good condition, but visibility was poor due to the fog, so I had to ski slowly. The Gotemba course (pictured), runs through stands of trees on each side that provided helpful landmarks and made it easier to ski than Tsuga-no-mori.

The Han-no-ki Slope (pictured) was groomed with well-pressed wet snow on the early to mid part of the run, and a less firm wet snow surface over the last half, which was out of the fog (pictured). I crossed paths with the owner of Cafe Entotu in Omachi City (pictured, right), which serves delicious homemade pasta. He told me, “I love your site. Sundays are great days for business, but I want to ski with my son, so I take Sundays off in winter.”

The NSD Cup 2024 Tsugaike Junior Cup Giant Slalom Competition was being held on the Shirakaba Slope, which had a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface. I was greeted by a group from the town of Inami in Toyama (pictured), who enthusiastically said they would do their best to try and win. The central parking lot was full as of 10:00 a.m.
