The low pressure system along the southern coast that brought heavy snowfall to the Kanto area and other parts of Japan had passed to the east of the Japanese archipelago, and this morning only light flurries of dry snow were falling at Iwatake. VIEW C and VIEW D (pictured) were groomed with moderately soft powder snow surfaces. I spoke with a man who had skied down VIEW A, who commented, “There were a few hard patches here and there, but it was a fun run!”

I also had a conversation with a couple of instructors with the Iwatake Snowboard School (pictured), who told me, “Both the groomed and ungroomed areas are pretty fun today. By the way, in addition to normal lessons, we also offer special lessons such as guided and escorted tours with photo and video recording, and park and ground trick lessons that teach you how to take advantage of the terrain at Iwatake. We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible!”

The rime ice covering the trees at the top of the mountain was beautiful, and yesterday’s 30 cm or so of fresh snow helped create a romantic atmosphere on the approach to HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR (pictured). I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns on the the moderately soft, groomed powder base of the South Slope.

Going back to the start of the day, the Mountain Side of the resort was shrouded in thick fog first thing this morning. Hilltop had about 30 cm of fluffy new snow, and I overheard people dropping in commenting that they couldn’t see. The groomed portion of the Sawa Course had a moderately soft surface, but it was difficult to see the boundary between the groomed and ungroomed areas on the sides, and I took a big fall as a result. (After returning to the office, the chief editor was concerned to hear that and asked if everything was ok. He was worried about my camera… not me.)
