Sanosaka REPORT

2024.02.06110cm / Cloudy

A low pressure system along the southern coast brought more snow than expected yesterday! The snow flurries falling in the early morning stopped around 8:00 a.m., and the weather stabilized with cloudy skies. I headed to the New Paradise Slope (pictured), the steepest slope on the upper portion of the resort, in search of powder, just as the 5th Pair started moving 5 minutes later than scheduled.

The New Paradise slope (pictured) had received about 40cm of new snow in 24 hours, and although it did not fully cover the tracks that had been made during the day yesterday, there was plenty enough to enjoy the “fluffy” feeling and floating sensation of powder! The groomed area, about the width of one to two grooming machines, on both sides of the 5th Pair had a soft powder snow surface.

I was able to enjoy some fast runs on the moderately soft, groomed powder bases of the Carving Course (pictured), both Paradise Slopes and the Lake Down Course. I spoke with a local Hakuba Village resident (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! I came to Sanosaka today because I thought it would be difficult to get to Hakuba from the Kanto area and the competition for fresh powder would be low here.”

I also conversed with a couple of skiers from the Komazawa University Silver Fox Ski Club (pictured) who told me they were training for the Iwatake Student Ski Competition taking place from 3/3 (Sun.) to 3/8 (Fri.). I saw them later on at the top of the Lake Down Course, and they commented, “It’s so beautiful today. We’ll come back for some more relaxed runs during our lunch break.”
