The popular annual JAPAN FREERIDE OPEN 2024 will take place over two days on 2/10 (Sat.) and 2/11 (Sun.)! (*2/12 is scheduled as a backup day). The event is jointly held by Cortina & Hakunori, but in previous editions, most of the competition has taken place on the steep ungroomd slopes and tree areas at Cortina. This morning, flurries of dry snow were falling, while blue skies were visible to the northwest.

The Warabidaira Slope (pictured here and above) had a moderately soft, groomed powder snow surface on the steep section at the beginning of the slope, and softer groomed powder snow on the gentle slope on the second half of the run. I spoke with a staff member who was in charge of the 4th Pair boarding area yesterday, and was told, “I love your site! I’m enjoying my day off today. There were so many customers all day yesterday, and there was a line to ride the 4th Pair all day long.”

The Rabbit Course (pictured) and Snake Course were also groomed with moderately soft powder snow that was easy to ski. They were empty compared to other courses, so I was able to get some good speed without any worry. The surface tracks and undulations on the ungroomed steep slopes and the Kamoshika Course were soft, which made them easy to manage.

The wide-open, flatly-groomed surface of the Ikenota Slope (pictured) had soft powder snow that was perfect for making large sweeping turns and small quick turns alike. The sun was shining, but the temperature seemed to rise only gently. The slopes maintained their dry conditions from the top to the bottom of the resort.
