Since the heavy snowfall brought on by a low pressure system off the southern coast on ⅖ (Mon.), the amount of sunlight has been limited (about 8 hours in total) and the rise in temperatures has been moderate. On this windless, cloudy morning, as I got off the gondola and walked across the groomed snow surface, I could hear the sound of perfect squeaking powder!

The Panorama Course (first photo) had tightly-packed groomed powder snow, topped with artificial snow in places, that was pleasant to ride at high speed, while the groomed southern route of Usagidaira had a firm powder snow base. The area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) had the best conditions of the morning, with moderately firm powder snow that held my skis firmly to the surface as if by some powerful magnetic force.

The ungroomed areas along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi 3 Pair, as well as the west side of the Skyline Course had reasonably firm surface tracks and moguls. The center of the Skyline Course (pictured) was groomed with pleasantly-packed powder snow. As I skied down to the level of the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, the snow quality shifted to a similarly firm wet snow that had the feeling of powder.

The Sakka Slope also had moderately-packed, groomed, “powdery” wet snowl, while Shirakaba had a firmly-groomed wet snow base. In other news, HAPPO PARKS, which has been closed for rebuilding until today, is scheduled to reopen tomorrow, 2/10 (Sat.), with additional items and a banked slalom course!
