Today I went and checked out the WHITE HOTEL GRAND HAKUBA, a hotel directly connected to the Lake Down Course, which reopened this season! Located off the main road, the hotel sits in a quiet, nature-rich area by Lake Aoki. Beyond the lobby is an atmospheric lounge (pictured) with high ceilings, rustic wooden furniture, an impressive fireplace, and large chandeliers.

Full-course French meals (pictured) are served for dinner, which feature many local ingredients. This particular day’s evening meal consisted of pâté de campagne (pork pâté), cured lamb and shrimp tablé, carrot soup, swordfish cologne with porcini and molille sauce, roasted French duck with red wine sauce, Nagano “purple rice” riolet, dried persimmon and kumquat compote. Breakfast is primarily Japanese food. (In the next report I’ll introduce the guest rooms.)

I spoke with an AZ Pro Snowboarding School instructor (pictured, left) who was enjoying their time off the slopes this morning. They told me, “I love your site! The slopes are in really good condition, and I got tricked into thinking that my snowboarding had improved.” Their cousin standing next to them added, “I’m getting lessons for free, so I have to come up with a gift as repayment.”

Paradise (third photo), Paradise Downhill (pictured), Lake Down, Carving, and New Paradise all had groomed powder snow that was well-packed and easy to ski. I conversed with a snowboarder from Osaka (pictured, center) in the middle of a lesson with the Kamoshika Snowboard School, who said, “I love your site! My instructor taught me well and the slope conditions are good today, so I think I will be able to progress quickly.”
