It was a beautiful morning with clear skies and beautiful views of Mt. Myoko (pictured) and Lake Nojiri. The weather has turned unseasonably warm across the country, and here in Kurohime, although it was as cold as -5℃ in the early morning due to radiative cooling, it was pleasant and comfortable after the resort opened. By 10:30 a.m., I didn’t feel cold at all, even while skiing with my jacket off.

Despite being the first weekday back after the three-day weekend, the KUROHIME FAMILY PARK was filled with the sound of cheerful children’s voices echoing in the air. I was greeted by a foreign father living in Myoko City (pictured, right), who commented on the amazing weather. The distant scenery of the mountains to the south was impressive, but so too were the views of the vast, white spaces of the SNOW DOG AREA and the Fairytale Forest Snow Wave (XC course) in the foreground.

The high temperatures caused the snow surfaces across the resort to loosen and moisten as the day went on. Members of the Shinshu University Demonstration Skiing Club (pictured) were practicing tight turns on even terrain on the large mogul lane on the skiers’ right side at the beginning of Leo. Meanwhile, on neighboring Blackbird, the slope was rented out for a group practicing skiing in formation, while another group was drilling wide turns on steep terrain on Mouse.

I had a conversation with the owner of a Siberian Husky named Banana (pictured), who told me, “I came to Kurohime for the first time because I heard that I could ski with my dog off-leash. He looks so happy to be able to run free and fast!” The Dog Course along Lift 7 (pictured) requires a leash, while the Bull course on the south side across the trees allows dogs to play without a leash.
