The early morning blue sky grew steadily overcast, and by 8:00 a.m. dark, dreary clouds filled the sky above. I spoke with a member of the resort staff, who commented, “I’m glad there’s no wind this morning, but I’m a little worried because strong winds are forecast for later in the afternoon.” The slopes were only dimly lit, but I was able to see the snow surface well and the skiing felt good.

The groomed southern route of Usagidaira (first photo) had a well-packed wet snow base that was pleasant to ride at speed. The Panorama Course (pictured) was groomed widely, and the moderately firm wet snow surface was great for linking comfortable, controlled turns.

The area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), like the Panorama Course, was very easy to ski thanks to the moderately firm, groomed wet snow base. The Skyline Course had slightly firmer wet snow, with small clumps of snow scattered across the surface towards the end of the run. Later around 9:00 a.m., rain mixed with pellets of ice began to fall lightly across the upper portion of the ski resort.

I also skied the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, which started out as a firm, groomed wet snow surface that gradually grew more and more granular the further I skied down. The Sakka Slope (pictured) and Shirakaba Slope were groomed with moderately firm granular snow that was starting to slush up a little. Entry is open now until 3/2 (Sat.) for the NORTH ALPS BANKED SLALOM series’ first round of competition, BANKED SLALOM H-ONE, which is scheduled to be held in Happo on 3/9 (Sat.). (*3/10 is set aside as a backup day. *The second round of registration will be open from 3/3 to 3/7.)
