Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2024.02.16200cm / Snow Clouds

Snowdrop, operated by the small seafood producer Denbei Suisan in Itoigawa as of this season, offers a menu featuring fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan! On 2/10 (Sat.) they began serving a new Amaebi-don rice bowl (pictured, ¥2,000, served with miso soup). The dish is a delicious treat for the eyes and palate, topped with 100 grams of freshly caught amaebi (sweet shrimp) from the Port of Itoigawa City, and finished off with three additional head-on shrimp.

Incidentally, Snowdrop is the white building next to the boarding area for the No. 5 High-Speed Pair (pictured, background center). Heavy rain was falling during the day yesterday, but cold weather returned overnight, and ligh snow was falling this morning. There was about 5 cm of fresh snow on top of the well-packed, groomed wet surface of the Wakaguri Central Slope.

Let’s go back to the start of the day. Despite it being a weekday, there were quite a few people on and around the slopes even before the resort opened for business, perhaps in part because the bus stop at the foot of the Hakunori Family Course is being advertised to international visitors as the “Gateway to Hakunori & Cortina.” I was greeted by three visitors from Australia and Canada (pictured), who told me, “Good morning! We’re heading to the No. 10 Pair Lift now.”

A strong northerly wind made it feel colder than the temperature suggested. I spoke with a couple from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured), that said, “We love your site! We come to the Hakuba area at least once a year.” By 10:00 a.m., the clouds had melted away and the sun was shining. The Satomi Central Slope (pictured), like the Wakaguri Central Slope, was easy to ski with about 5 cm of new snow on top of a firm, groomed wet snow base.
