The forecast stated that southerly winds would strengthen across the country, bringing warmer temperatures, and that is exactly what we saw happen. The official temperatures at Happo this morning were +3°C at the top of the resort and +5°C at the base, and it felt every bit as warm. Looking up from the gondola as I got off, I was surprised to see that Sodeguro (pictured, center) had been groomed.
[Panorama Course]
The Panorama Course and the area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) were groomed with moderately loose granular snow surfaces, while the groomed section of Usagidaira had a granular snow base that was closer to slush. There were medium to large sized moguls on the slope along the Alpen Quad (pictured, background left), which had moderately packed granular snow.
[Kurobishi Slope]
I spoke with a Happo regular (pictured), who commented, “It’s been warm these past few days. I wonder if the snow will last until Golden Week this season. Like Usagidaira, the groomed Skyline Course also had a slush-like surface of granular snow. However, I enjoyed the spring-like conditions and my skis slid well on Panorama, Usagidaira, Kurobishi, and Skyline.
[Kurobishi Slope]
HAPPO PARKS (pictured), like the area along the Kurobishi Quad, featured moderately loose, groomed granular snow, and each of the park elements were well maintained. The Kitaone Traverse Cat Track and Sakka Wave were groomed with coarse spring snow surfaces, while the route from the Sakka Slope to the Kokusai Slope was ungroomed.
