Yesterday’s rain turned to snow this morning before dawn. I spoke with a ski patroller this morning who told me, “The temperature dropped rapidly from dawn to early morning, anddue to poor course conditions, the Cosmo Four lift will be closed all day.” Slightly wet snow was falling weakly on the slopes, and the lifts, including the Goryu Telecabine falling weakly, were delayed due to prolonged maintenance inspections.

There was about 1 cm of somewhat wet, fresh snow on top of the hard, groomed granular snow surfaces of the Powder Snow (pictured here and above) and Soft Cream courses. I had a chat with a snowboarder from Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “I love your site. The slopes are hard today. It was warm when I left home, so I was worried about the conditions, but I’m glad it’s snowing. I hope it keeps coming down and the conditions improve.”

The Goryu Telecabin eventually started moving about 30 minutes later than scheduled. A weak northerly wind was blowing, and the snow was coming down hard at Alps-Daira, where the hard packed granular snow surface was covered with 2 to 3 cm of light, fluffy snow. The new snow on the groomed slopes provided a nice cushion, and I was able to turn as I wished, but conditions were tough on the ungroomed areas due to the hard packed tracks and surface bumps.
[Grand Prix Course]
Rime ice had returned to the trees from the middle to the upper portions of the ski resort, and was especially beautiful mid-mountain. The hard-packed, groomed granular snow bases covered in 1 to 3 cm loosened up gradually as I skied down the Dynamic Course, Woody Course, and Toomi Slope. In other news, the “Ride with the People Japan Tour 2024” will be held in front of ESCAL on 2/24 (Sat.) (test rides start at 9:00 am, while the night event kicks off at 6:00 pm), and a Burton Snowboard Test Ride will take place on 2/24 (Sat.) and 2/25 (Sun.).
