Sugadaira REPORT

2024.02.23100cm / Snowy

Located at the entrance to the city of Suzaka, the north-facing Ura Taro Slope has the longest-lasting and most-stable snow cover in Sugadaira. Two lifts, the Stage 1 Triple (455m) and Stage 3 Detachable Quad (445m), serve a total of seven courses: East, West, Kamoshika, Super Racer, Rabbit, Schi Heil, and Challenge. I spoke with a man from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, back right), who told me, “This is my second time in Sugadaira. The last time was so good that I invited my friends to come and board with me this time.”

On this first day of the three-day weekend, the Ura Taro area was completely white due to a combination of falling snow, fog cover, and frost-covered trees, with a light wind blowing from the north. The groomers were at work right up until 8:00 a.m., and the Ura Taro Family West (pictured), East (third photo), Schi Heil (first photo), Super Racer, and Kamoshika had a mix of granular snow and dry, fresh snow, that was moderately packed and easy to ski.

Winter had returned just in time for the second three-day weekend in February, and there was about 5 cm of fresh snow on the ungroomed areas. Among the seven courses, the best snow quality was on the Rabbit Course, which had a moderately soft base that felt very powdery. The Ura Taro parking area was crowded from early in the day, and by around 9:30 a.m., the lot was 70 to 80% full.

Giant slalom flag gates were set up at Ura Taro Super Racer, and at Urataro Kamoshika, gates for alpine boarding were in place thanks to the Smile Gate Club members (pictured). The 2nd Annual NSD Kids Ski and Snowboard Competition will be held at Ura Taro Kamoshika over the next two days.
