The trees flanking the slopes are sagging under the weight of the ice and frost that’s clinging to them due to the freezing rain on 2/22 (Thu.) and the subsequent rime ice and snow from 2/23 (Fri.). From Line-C, which started moving at 9:10 a.m., I was able to see at least one tree that had fallen down (pictured, bottom right). In fact, ski patrollers from 47 had to clear three fallen trees, and were still amazingly able to keep the delay to only 30 minutes! With the lifts back on track, I headed to the upper portion of the resort.

A weak wind was blowing from the north, and light snow was falling on the upper portion of Route 1, which was groomed with a moderately soft wet snow surface topped with 1 to 3 cm of light, fresh snow. I ran into Zamaan (pictured, center), the owner of Testu Kobo Mura no Kaji-ya, and two Island Joy users (pictured, upper right), who told me they were fans of Snownavi before flying by and disappearing below me.

I was able to make some nice turns on routes 4, 5, 6 (pictured) and the first half of route 7, which were groomed with about 1 cm of fresh snow on top of wet, groomed snow surfaces mixed with a little granular snow. Conditions were difficult on the lower part of Route 1, where the surface was a mix of hard packed and moderately firm wet and granular snow. By 10:30 a.m., the second half of Route 7 had begun to loosen up and turn to slush.

At 47PARKS, the COWDAY SLOPE 2024 event has kicked off! Before the official practice session began at 11:00, the mother of Azumi Nakano, a pro from Hakuba Village (pictured, right) who became the youngest JSBA pro in history, told me, “My daughter is still in the 4th grade and cannot compete, but she will ski tomorrow in the preliminary round and the again the day after tomorrow before the final. Please cheer for her and her friend Rokka-chan (pictured, left), who is competing as a junior high school student!”
