REPORT

The location of the FIS Para Alpine Skiing-sanctioned 2024 Japan Para Alpine Skiing Championships, which we previously reported on, has been changed from the Riesen Slalom Course to the Panorama Course and the dates also shortened by a day; now taking place from 2/29 (Thurs.) to 3/2 (Sat.). This morning, dry snow was falling along with a light westerly wind.

The Panorama Course and Panorama Beginner Course (forest road, first photo) had well-packed, groomed wet snow, while the area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) and the south side of Usagidaira were groomed with moderately firm, “powdery” wet snow. Each of the slopes were in good condition, however, Usagidaira, Kurobishi, and Riesen Grat were covered with thick fog.

Contrary to my expectations, the officially reported snow depth had not changed from yesterday’s 205 cm. Even so, I came hoping to find powder, and was disappointed to find that the amount of new snow in the ungroomed areas along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi 3 Pair Lift was only 5 to 10 cm. I spoke with a Happo regular who said, “There is definitely less fresh snow than I expected. Perhaps the strong winds blew it away.”

As I skied down toward Sakka, I found myself emerging out from under the clouds at the beginning of the Skyline Course (pictured). The Skyline Course and HAPPO PARKS area were groomed with firm wet snow surfaces that had the feeling of powder. Sakka Slope and Sakka Wave were also groomed, and had moderately firm wet snow bases. In other news, “OAKLEY COMMUNITY DAYS” will be held this weekend from 3/2 (Sat.) to 3/3 (Sun.)!
